Adult Literacy

“Education is one of the blessings of life — and one of its necessities.” — Malala Yousafzai, in her Nobel Peace Prize Lecture. Jul 7, 2022

After a thorough and collaborative needs assessment with the Mungu community, it was evident that lower than average literacy levels existed for women. This prompted MIGHTi to initiate adult literacy classes for Mungu women in May 2023, at no cost to them.

Since then we have completed 7 months of adult literacy classes serving 80 women living in rural Mungu Ward of Kafue, Zambia. In December 2023 a total of 27 women took their MIGHTi assessment exams for grade-levels 7, 9, and 12! And in early 2024, those that are ready to move on will take government grade level exams. Classes will start again in January 2024.

These classes not only provide a safe space for women to further their skills, but also achieve education goals they may not have been able to before. We will offering participants the ability to take grade-level exams at the end of the course and proceed to more advanced levels, at a low cost. Improved literacy and proof of passing a government exam opens a myriad of doors to rural women–doors for jobs, new businesses, leadership, and bolstered self-esteem.
